To improve student reading skills, the Florida Department of Education has introduced a free online professional development system called Flamingo Literacy Matrix. The system was developed by the University of Florida’s Lastinger Center for Learning and has been used in Florida public schools since 2010. Flamingo Literacy Matrix has been found to significantly improve teacher knowledge and skill sets, and can be used by teachers in a variety of settings.
Teachers can enroll in this free online course as part of Early Learning Florida’s professional development program. Course completion enables teachers to earn 2.0-2.5 CEUs and a $125-150 stipend. Additionally, educators may be eligible for the course as part of their Reading Endorsement. Those interested should contact Early Learning Florida to find out if they qualify.
