Valentine’s Day is a holiday where people celebrate love and friendship with their friends, families, significant others, and even pets. The Fort Worth Zoo is celebrating a different kind of love this year with the hatchings of 17 lesser flamingo chicks (Phoenicopterus minor). These new little Valentines are receiving around-the-clock care and feeding from zoo keepers and their parents.
These new babies aren’t just adorable, they are also essential to the zoo’s breeding program for this rare and endangered species. Lesser flamingos are extremely difficult to breed in captivity and the Fort Worth Zoo is one of only seven zoos in the United States that has them. Hopefully, these new chicks will help the zoo achieve its goal of doubling its population in the next five years.
This cute flamingo Valentine craft is the perfect activity for kids of all ages to enjoy this Valentine’s Day. Preschool, elementary, and tween-aged children will all love creating these sweet Valentines. They can paste them onto a card or even tape a string on the back and hang them up for a special Valentine’s decoration.
Using pink and red craft paper, cut out all the pieces of the flamingos from the templates. Next, take a thicker pipe cleaner and bend it in the shape of the number two with slightly curved lines indicating feet. Add a couple of smaller, thin pipe cleaners to the bottom of the body pipe cleaner, oriented with the bent leg in front of the straight leg. Glue a googly eye on top of the head to complete the look of your flamingo.
